Ingredients
Cake Batter
- 1 box white cake mix
- Ingredients called for on cake mix box (usually eggs, oil, water)
- 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon extract
- Green food coloring
- Purple food coloring
- Gold food coloring
Frosting
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Green food coloring
- Purple food coloring
- Gold food coloring
- Optional: Mardi Gras sprinkles for decoration
Instructions
- Prepare the cake batter: Follow the white cake mix box instructions by combining the mix with the required eggs, oil, and water. Add 1/4 teaspoon almond extract and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon extract to the batter to add festive flavors.
- Color the batter: Divide the batter evenly into three separate bowls. Add green food coloring to one, purple to another, and gold food coloring to the last bowl. Stir each until the batter is uniformly tinted.
- Create marbled cupcakes: Spoon small amounts of each colored batter alternately into cupcake liners. Slightly swirl the batter with a toothpick or skewer to create a marbled effect, taking care not to overmix.
- Bake the cupcakes: Place the cupcake tray in the oven and bake according to the time and temperature suggested on the cake mix box. Once baked, remove and allow the cupcakes to cool completely.
- Make the frosting: Beat the softened butter in a mixing bowl until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar alternating with milk, beating continuously until the frosting is smooth and fluffy. Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
- Color the frosting: Divide the frosting into three bowls, tinting each with green, purple, and gold food coloring respectively.
- Frost the cupcakes: Once cupcakes are fully cooled, frost them using the colored frostings. You can alternate the colors or create stripes for a festive look.
- Decorate: Optionally, sprinkle Mardi Gras themed sprinkles on top of the frosted cupcakes for added color and texture.
Notes
- Make sure cupcakes are completely cooled before frosting to avoid melting the buttercream.
- For deeper colors, add food coloring a few drops at a time until desired vibrancy is achieved.
- The marbling effect is best achieved by gentle swirling; avoid overmixing to keep distinct colors.
- Use room temperature butter for a smooth and easy-to-mix frosting.
- If you prefer, use a piping bag to frost cupcakes with precision and style.
