Ingredients
For the Crust and Topping
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
For the Filling
- 3 cups peeled and thinly sliced apples (about 3 medium apples)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup salted caramel sauce
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make it easy to remove the bars.
- Mix Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the melted unsalted butter, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir until well blended.
- Add Flour and Form Crust: Gradually add the all-purpose flour to the wet mixture, stirring until the texture becomes crumbly. Reserve about one-third of this mixture for the topping, and firmly press the remaining two-thirds evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking pan to form the crust.
- Prepare Apple Filling: In a separate bowl, toss the peeled and thinly sliced apples with ground cinnamon and ground nutmeg, ensuring the slices are well coated with the spices.
- Assemble Layers: Spread the spiced apple mixture evenly over the crust layer in the pan. Drizzle the salted caramel sauce over the apples for a rich, sweet flavor. Finally, crumble the reserved flour mixture evenly over the top as the finishing crumbly topping.
- Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the apples are tender when pierced with a fork.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the pan from the oven and allow the bars to cool completely in the pan. This cooling step helps the bars set properly. Once cooled, cut them into 24 equal squares and serve.
Notes
- Use tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for a balance of sweet and tangy flavors.
- Make sure to cool the bars completely before cutting to avoid crumbling.
- For extra flair, drizzle additional caramel sauce on top before serving.
- Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
- To keep the crust crispier, avoid refrigerating the bars.
