Ingredients
Onions
- 12 pieces Cipollini Onions (small and sweet for blooming)
Dipping & Coating
- 1 cup Buttermilk (or whole milk mixed with vinegar as a substitute)
- 1 cup All-Purpose Flour (for the best texture)
- 1 tablespoon Spice Mix (garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, dry mustard, salt, black pepper; adjust for heat)
Frying
- 4 cups Oil (vegetable or canola oil for frying)
Instructions
- Preparation: Trim the tops and bottoms off the cipollini onions carefully. Score the sides of each onion to help them bloom when fried.
- Soak Onions: If peeling the onions is tricky, soak them in warm water briefly to ease the process.
- Mix Buttermilk: Pour the buttermilk into a bowl to be used for dipping the onions.
- Combine Spices and Flour: In a separate bowl, mix the all-purpose flour with the prepared spice mix thoroughly to create the seasoned coating.
- Double-Coat the Onions: Dip each onion first into the buttermilk, then dredge them in the flour-spice mixture. Repeat the buttermilk dip and flour dredge again to ensure a thick, crispy coating.
- Heat the Oil: Heat the oil in a deep pan to about 350°F (175°C), making sure the oil is hot enough for frying but not smoking.
- Fry the Onions: Carefully place the onions cut-side down in the hot oil. Fry for about 3-4 minutes, flipping halfway through until they turn a beautiful golden brown and are crispy on the outside.
- Drain and Season: Remove the onions with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. Season immediately with a little extra salt if desired.
- Serve: Serve the blooming onions warm alongside a bowl of creamy buttermilk ranch dip for dipping enjoyment.
Notes
- Use cipollini onions as they are small and perfect for blooming; larger onions won’t bloom the same way.
- If you don’t have buttermilk, a mixture of whole milk and vinegar or lemon juice can be used as a substitute.
- Maintain oil temperature at 350°F for the best frying results; too hot will burn the coating and too cool will make them greasy.
- Adjust the spice mix to your heat preference—smoked paprika adds depth and a slight smokiness.
- Be sure to double coat onions for an extra crunchy texture.
- Drain well on paper towels to keep them crispy and prevent sogginess.
