This easy Bread Sloppy Joes recipe transforms the classic American sloppy joe into a hearty, cheesy sandwich using Italian bread. Ground beef cooked with onions and a tangy tomato-based sauce is spread over garlic buttered bread halves, topped with mozzarella and cheddar cheese, and baked to golden perfection. Perfect for a comforting family meal, it’s ready in just under 30 minutes and serves 8.

  • Total Time: 29 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

Bread and Butter

  • 1 loaf Italian bread
  • ½ cup (1 stick / 113 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt

Sloppy Joe Mixture

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ¼ cup yellow onion, chopped
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • ¾ cup (180 g) ketchup
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ cup water

Toppings

  • 1 cup (113 g) mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup (113 g) sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • parsley, chopped for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ease cleanup.
  2. Slice the Bread: Cut the loaf of Italian bread lengthwise into two halves. Place both halves cut side up on the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Prepare Garlic Butter: In a small bowl, mix the softened unsalted butter with garlic salt until well combined. Spread this garlic butter mixture evenly over the cut sides of the bread halves. Set aside while preparing the filling.
  4. Cook Ground Beef and Onions: In a medium nonstick skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef with the chopped yellow onions until the beef is browned and no longer pink, about 8-10 minutes. Drain any excess grease from the skillet.
  5. Add Seasonings and Sauce: Stir into the cooked beef mixture the garlic powder, yellow mustard, ketchup, kosher salt, black pepper, and water, blending everything until well combined. Simmer for a few minutes so that the flavors meld together.
  6. Assemble the Sloppy Joes: Evenly divide the sloppy joe mixture over the garlic buttered sides of the bread halves on the baking sheet. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella and sharp cheddar cheeses generously over the meat mixture.
  7. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 12 to 14 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the bread edges are golden brown and crispy.
  8. Serve: Remove from oven, cut the bread into pieces, garnish with chopped parsley, and serve warm for a delicious, crowd-pleasing meal.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the sloppy joe mixture.
  • Use a crusty bread loaf like Italian or French for best texture and to handle the moist filling.
  • To make ahead, prepare the sloppy joe filling and store in the refrigerator up to 2 days; assemble and bake when ready to serve.
  • Leftovers can be stored covered in the refrigerator for up to 2 days; reheat in the oven to maintain crispness.
