Ingredients
For the Dough
- 1 pound pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)
For the Filling
- 1 1/2 cups cooked chicken, shredded
- 1/2 cup buffalo wing sauce
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/4 cup ranch or blue cheese dressing
- 1 tablespoon chopped green onions (optional)
For Assembly
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- All-purpose flour (for dusting)
Instructions
- Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and for easy cleanup.
- Roll out dough: On a floured surface, roll out the pizza dough into a large oval or circle approximately 1/4 inch thick to create a base that’s easy to fold and cooks evenly.
- Mix chicken and sauce: In a bowl, combine the shredded cooked chicken with the buffalo wing sauce until the chicken is evenly coated with spicy flavor.
- Apply dressing: Spread the ranch or blue cheese dressing over one half of the rolled-out dough, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges for sealing the calzone.
- Add filling: Spread the buffalo chicken mixture over the dressing, then sprinkle evenly with shredded mozzarella cheese and chopped green onions if using for added flavor and texture.
- Fold and seal: Fold the dough over to cover the filling completely. Pinch the edges firmly to seal the calzone, and optionally crimp with a fork to ensure no filling leaks during baking.
- Prepare for baking: Brush the top of the calzone with the beaten egg wash to give it a golden, glossy finish. Cut a few small slits on top to allow steam to escape while baking.
- Bake: Place the calzone on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 18 to 22 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly and hot.
- Cool and serve: Remove from the oven and let the calzone cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving to allow the filling to set slightly and prevent burning.
Notes
- You can substitute buffalo wing sauce with your preferred hot sauce for varying spice levels.
- Use homemade pizza dough for a fresher taste or store-bought for convenience.
- Adding green onions is optional but adds a nice crunch and mild onion flavor.
- The egg wash helps achieve a beautiful golden crust but can be skipped for an egg-free version.
- Serve with extra ranch or blue cheese dressing for dipping.
- Ensure the calzone is sealed tightly to prevent filling from leaking during baking.
