Ingredients
Apples & Sticks
- 6 medium Granny Smith apples (or Honeycrisp for extra sweetness)
- 6 sturdy sticks or decorative straws
Coatings & Toppings
- 16 oz white chocolate (melting wafers or candy coating)
- ½ cup crushed golden Oreos or vanilla wafers
- ½ cup freeze-dried strawberries, crushed
- 2 tbsp butter cookies or graham crackers, crushed (optional)
- Red candy melts (for drizzle)
- Fresh strawberries, chopped (for topping)
Instructions
- Prepare the apples: Wash the apples thoroughly and dry completely to remove any wax on their surface. If necessary, dip them briefly in hot water mixed with vinegar to ensure a clean, wax-free finish.
- Insert sticks: Firmly insert sturdy sticks or decorative straws into the tops of each apple to serve as handles for dipping and eating.
- Make the crumb mixture: Place the golden Oreos (or vanilla wafers), freeze-dried strawberries, and optional crushed graham crackers or butter cookies into a food processor. Pulse until the mixture becomes crumbly and well combined. Set this aside for coating.
- Melt the white chocolate: Gently melt the white chocolate using a microwave in short bursts or via a double boiler method until it becomes smooth and easy to dip.
- Dip the apples: Holding each apple by the stick, dip it fully into the melted white chocolate, turning to coat evenly all over the surface.
- Coat with crumbs: While the chocolate is still wet, roll or press the bottom halves of each apple into the prepared crumb mixture to create a crunchy textured layer.
- Set the apples: Place the coated apples on a parchment-lined tray to allow the chocolate and crumbs to start setting.
- Drizzle with red candy melts: Melt the red candy melts gently and use a spoon or piping bag to drizzle thin stripes over each apple for a decorative and colorful finish.
- Add fresh strawberries: Before the chocolate coating fully hardens, sprinkle chopped fresh strawberries on top for added freshness and flavor.
- Let them harden: Allow the candy apples to harden at room temperature or refrigerate them for 20 to 30 minutes to ensure the coatings set completely.
- Serve: Enjoy these fresh, sweet, and crunchy candy apples as a delightful treat or party snack!
Notes
- Use Granny Smith apples for a tart contrast or Honeycrisp for extra sweetness.
- Ensure apples are fully dry to help the chocolate coating adhere well.
- You can customize the crumb coating by using different cookies or adding nuts if desired.
- Melt the chocolate carefully to avoid burning or seizing.
- Store the candy apples in a cool place and consume within 2 days for best freshness.
