Cheese Roll Ups are a delicious and easy-to-make snack featuring soft white bread rolled around melty cheddar cheese, pan-fried to golden perfection. This quick recipe yields a crispy exterior with gooey cheese inside, perfect for a comforting treat or party appetizer.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

Bread

  • 8 thick slices of soft white bread (crusts removed)

Filling

  • 1.5 cups / 150g finely grated cheddar cheese

Butter

  • 2 tbsp butter, melted (or as needed)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bread: Slice the crusts off each slice of bread. Using a rolling pin, flatten each slice gently to make them thin and pliable.
  2. Add cheese: Place a pinch of finely grated cheddar cheese on each flattened bread slice. Leave a small strip at one end without cheese for sealing.
  3. Roll up: Carefully roll each bread slice tightly from the end with cheese towards the strip left bare. Brush the bare strip with melted butter to help seal the roll. Place each roll seam-side-down on a plate. Brush the entire outside surface of each roll generously with melted butter.
  4. Fry the roll ups: Heat a dry frying pan over low to medium heat. Add the roll ups seam-side-down first and cook until they are golden brown on all sides and the cheese inside is starting to melt and leak out slightly. Use tongs to turn them frequently for even frying. Depending on pan size, fry in two batches if necessary.

Notes

  • Use thick slices of soft white bread for best results. Do not use stale or very dry bread as it will crack when rolling.
  • For extra flavor, you can mix herbs such as parsley or chives into the cheese before filling.
  • If preferred, substitute butter with a light oil for frying but butter enhances flavor.
  • Serve hot immediately for the best crispy texture and gooey cheese experience.
