Experience the rich, velvety indulgence of traditional French hot chocolate, known as Le Chocolate Chaud. Made with quality dark chocolate and creamy whole milk, this easy-to-make beverage offers intense chocolate flavor with a perfectly smooth and thick texture. Sweetened lightly with optional brown sugar and finished with a pinch of sea salt to enhance the depth, it’s delicious served with a dollop of whipped cream for a luxurious treat.

  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Milk Base

  • 2 cups whole milk

Chocolate Mixture

  • 6 ounces top quality dark or bittersweet chocolate (at least 70%), chopped finely
  • 1-2 tablespoons brown sugar (optional, according to taste)
  • tiny pinch of sea salt

Garnish

  • whipped cream for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat the Milk: Pour the whole milk into a medium saucepan and warm over medium heat until it becomes hot and tiny bubbles appear around the edges, just before boiling.
  2. Add Chocolate and Salt: Reduce heat to low, then add the finely chopped dark chocolate along with a pinch of sea salt to the hot milk. Whisk constantly until the chocolate is fully melted and the mixture becomes smooth and glossy.
  3. Simmer and Thicken: Bring the chocolate mixture to a very low simmer, whisking continuously to avoid burning, and allow it to simmer gently for about 3 minutes. This step helps thicken the hot chocolate to a luxurious, velvety consistency.
  4. Sweeten: Stir in brown sugar if desired, whisking thoroughly until fully dissolved to balance the bitterness of the dark chocolate.
  5. Serve: Pour the hot chocolate into cups and, if you like, top it with a generous dollop of whipped cream for a creamy finish.

Notes

  • For an even thicker and more intense chocolate drink, prepare the chocolate ahead of time, let it cool completely, then reheat gently before serving.
  • Use high-quality chocolate with at least 70% cocoa for the best flavor and richness.
  • Adjust sweetness by varying the amount of brown sugar or omit it entirely for a less sweet drink.
  • The pinch of sea salt enhances the overall chocolate flavor and balances bitterness.
