Ingredients
Cake
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup white granulated sugar
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) salted butter, melted and slightly cooled
Filling
- 3/4 cup salted butter, softened to room temperature (1 1/2 sticks)
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
Glaze
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 5 tablespoons milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray that includes flour for best results.
- Make the cake batter: In a large bowl or stand mixer bowl, combine 3 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 cup white granulated sugar, 4 teaspoons baking powder, 2 large eggs, 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, and 1 1/2 cups milk. Stir or mix to combine.
- Add melted butter: With the mixer running, slowly pour in the 1/2 cup melted salted butter. Mix just until incorporated, taking care not to overmix to avoid a dense cake.
- Spread batter in pan: Evenly spread the cake batter into the prepared 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Prepare cinnamon filling: In a small bowl, combine 3/4 cup softened salted butter, 1 cup packed light brown sugar, 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour, and 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon. Stir until fully blended.
- Add filling to cake: Drop spoonfuls of the cinnamon filling evenly over the cake batter in the pan.
- Swirl filling: Using a butter knife, create marbled swirl patterns by dragging it through both the cinnamon filling and the cake batter in the pan.
- Bake: Place the cake in the preheated oven and bake for 35-40 minutes. Insert a knife into the center to check doneness; it should come out clean when the cake is done.
- Make the glaze: While the cake bakes, whisk together 2 cups powdered sugar, 5 tablespoons milk, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract in a bowl. Adjust thickness by adding more powdered sugar or milk as needed.
- Glaze and serve: Once baked, pour the glaze over the warm cake. The cake can be served warm or at room temperature, but it will slice more easily after cooling.
Notes
- Do not overmix the batter to keep the cake tender and moist.
- For best results, use salted butter for both the filling and cake unless substituting with unsalted and adding salt separately.
- Allow the cake to cool slightly before glazing to prevent the glaze from melting too much.
- This cake can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 days or refrigerated for up to 5 days.
- Reheat slices gently in the microwave to enjoy warm cinnamon roll flavors anytime.
