Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 2 pounds lean ground beef
- 1 cup white onion, diced
- 1 small green bell pepper, seeded and diced
Sauce and Seasoning
- 16 ounces tomato sauce
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 teaspoons prepared yellow mustard
- 2 teaspoons brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons Kickin’ Cajun Seasoning Mix (or store bought Creole or Cajun Seasoning)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper (adjust amount as needed)
- 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground pepper
To Serve
- 8 Kaiser rolls or hamburger buns, toasted
Instructions
- Cook the Meat and Vegetables: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the lean ground beef, diced white onion, and diced green bell pepper. Cook until the meat crumbles and there is no pink remaining in the beef. Drain any excess fat from the skillet and return it to the heat.
- Prepare the Sauce: Add the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, prepared yellow mustard, brown sugar, Kickin’ Cajun Seasoning Mix, garlic powder, crushed red pepper (to taste), and fresh ground pepper to the skillet. Stir thoroughly to combine all ingredients evenly.
- Simmer the Mixture: Reduce the heat to low and let the sloppy joe mixture simmer for 20 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent sticking and to allow the flavors to meld together.
- Serve: Spoon the warm sloppy joe mixture onto toasted Kaiser rolls or hamburger buns. Serve immediately for best taste.
Notes
- Adjust crushed red pepper to control the heat level to your preference.
- Drain the cooked beef well to avoid a greasy filling.
- To save time, use pre-diced onions and bell peppers.
- For added flavor, you can toast the buns with butter on a skillet before serving.
- Leftover sloppy joe mixture can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for longer storage.
