Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 2½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- ¾ cup brown sugar, packed
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Additional
- Gel food coloring (pastel pink, purple, yellow, and blue)
- 2 cups chocolate chips, divided (1½ cups for dough, ½ cup for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt until well combined. Set this mixture aside for later use.
- Cream Butter and Sugars: In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the softened unsalted butter, granulated sugar, and packed brown sugar together until the mixture becomes light and fluffy, which usually takes about 2-3 minutes.
- Add Eggs and Vanilla: Incorporate the eggs into the butter and sugar mixture one at a time, beating well after each addition to ensure they are fully mixed. Then, stir in the vanilla extract until fully incorporated.
- Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing on a low speed just until combined. Be careful not to overmix the dough to maintain tender cookies.
- Add Chocolate Chips: Fold 1½ cups of the chocolate chips gently into the cookie dough, reserving the remaining ½ cup for topping later.
- Divide and Color the Dough: Split the cookie dough into four equal portions. Add a different pastel gel food coloring—pink, purple, yellow, and blue—to each portion. Mix gently until the color is evenly distributed without overworking the dough.
- Create Marbled Effect: Take small pieces from each colored dough portion and gently press them together without fully blending. This creates a beautiful marbled effect. Form the marbled dough into balls approximately 2 tablespoons in size.
- Prepare for Baking: Place the marbled dough balls on the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart to allow for spreading. Slightly flatten each ball with your palm and press some of the reserved chocolate chips onto the tops of the cookies for extra chocolatey crunch.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes until the edges are just set and beginning to turn golden. The centers may still look slightly soft, which ensures a chewy texture.
- Cool: Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely. This helps them set properly without breaking.
- Serve: Once cooled, serve these colorful marbled Easter cookies with a glass of milk or your favorite beverage. Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature to maintain freshness.
Notes
- Use gel food coloring for vibrant pastel colors without altering dough consistency.
- Do not overmix the dough to keep the cookies tender and soft.
- Space dough balls adequately on the baking sheet to prevent merging during baking.
- For extra crispiness, bake a couple of minutes longer, but watch carefully to avoid burning.
- These cookies keep well in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
- For a gluten-free version, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free baking flour blend.
