Ingredients
For the Cream Cheese Filling
- 8 ounces cream cheese (room temperature)
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Pastry
- 2 sheets puff pastry (thawed)
- 1 large egg (beaten)
- 3 tablespoons Turbinado sugar (or raw sugar)
Toppings
- 1 cup fresh strawberries
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to ensure the Danish Hearts bake evenly and don’t stick.
- Mix cream cheese filling: In a large bowl, use a hand mixer to beat together the room temperature cream cheese, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.
- Prepare pastry hearts: Gently unfold the thawed puff pastry sheets and roll out the creases with a rolling pin for an even thickness. Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, punch out 10 heart shapes and place them evenly spaced on the prepared baking sheet.
- Assemble the filling: Spoon a dollop of the cream cheese mixture onto each heart-shaped pastry and carefully spread it into a smaller heart shape, leaving a small border around the edges to allow the pastry to puff.
- Add strawberry topping: Thinly slice the fresh strawberries and arrange a few slices on top of the cream cheese filling on each pastry heart.
- Prepare for baking: Brush the exposed edges of each pastry heart with the beaten egg to give them a shiny, golden finish. Sprinkle the Turbinado sugar over the edges for added crunch and sweetness.
- Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 15 to 18 minutes or until the puff pastry is golden brown and puffed up nicely.
- Finish and serve: Remove the Danish Hearts from the oven and let them cool slightly. Dust the tops generously with powdered sugar before serving. Enjoy warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- Ensure cream cheese is at room temperature for easy mixing and smooth filling.
- Thaw puff pastry completely before use for best results.
- Use fresh, ripe strawberries for the best flavor and texture.
- Turbinado sugar adds a nice crunch but you can substitute with coarse sugar if needed.
- Serve fresh as these are best enjoyed the day they are baked.
