Ingredients
Dough
- 1 cup active sourdough starter discard
- 2 to 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup warm water
Garlic Butter
- ½ cup unsalted butter
- 4 cloves fresh garlic, minced (or 1 teaspoon garlic powder)
- ¼ cup fresh chopped parsley
Additional
- Cheese (mozzarella, cheddar, or dairy-free cheese), amount as desired
Instructions
- Mix Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of sourdough starter discard with 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1 cup of warm water. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
- Knead Dough: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. Add more flour if the dough is sticky.
- First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 2 hours until doubled in size.
- Prepare Garlic Butter: While the dough rises, melt ½ cup unsalted butter in a small saucepan. Add minced garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Remove from heat and stir in chopped parsley.
- Divide Dough: After the first rise, punch down the dough and place it onto a floured surface. Divide the dough into golf ball-sized pieces.
- Coat Dough Pieces: Dip each piece of dough into the garlic butter mixture, fully coating them.
- Layer in Pan: Arrange the coated dough pieces in a greased bundt or loaf pan, layering and stacking them. Optionally, add cheese between layers for extra flavor.
- Second Rise: Cover the pan with a towel and let the dough rise again for 30-45 minutes until puffy.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and cooked through. Brush additional garlic butter on top during the last 5 minutes for extra flavor.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the bread to cool for a few minutes before removing from the pan. Serve warm and pull apart to enjoy the garlicky, buttery bread pieces.
Notes
- You can adjust the amount of flour as needed to achieve a soft but workable dough.
- Use fresh garlic for best flavor, but garlic powder is a convenient alternative.
- Layer cheese between dough pieces for a cheesy pull-apart version.
- Make sure to grease the pan well to prevent sticking.
- Serve warm for the best taste and texture.
- This recipe is a great way to use sourdough starter discard instead of wasting it.
