This classic Sloppy Joe recipe features a savory ground beef mixture cooked with onions, green peppers, and a tangy sauce made from ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and a hint of sugar. Perfectly seasoned and served hot on buns, this quick and comforting dish makes an ideal meal for busy weeknights.

  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 lb 80/20 ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped fine
  • 1 medium green pepper, chopped fine

Seasonings and Sauces

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp canola oil
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare vegetables: Heat 1 tablespoon of canola oil in a large frying pan over medium-low heat. Add the chopped onion and green pepper, sautéing for about 5 minutes until they begin to soften.
  2. Adjust pan setup: Push the softened onions and peppers to the outer edge of the pan and increase the heat to medium-high.
  3. Brown the beef: Spread the ground beef evenly in the center of the pan. Cook undisturbed for 5 minutes until it starts to brown on one side.
  4. Cook and season beef: Season the beef with salt and black pepper, then flip it over. Break the beef into small pieces using a wooden spoon or spatula and continue cooking for 2-3 minutes until fully cooked and no longer pink.
  5. Add sauce and simmer: Reduce heat to medium-low. Stir in ketchup, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and sugar. Cook for another 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the flavors meld and the mixture is heated through.
  6. Serve: Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto burger buns and serve hot.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner version.
  • Add a dash of hot sauce if you prefer a spicier sloppy joe.
  • Top with shredded cheese or pickles for extra flavor and texture.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Serve with a side of coleslaw or potato chips for a classic pairing.
