Ingredients
Chocolate Custard
- 150 g dark chocolate, chopped
- 500 ml ready made custard
Whipped Cream
- 600 ml double cream
- 2 tbsp icing sugar
Base and Fruit Layers
- 1 jumbo chocolate swiss roll
- 4-5 tbsp Kirsch (optional)
- 400-600 g cherries in kirsch/cherries in syrup/cherry pie filling
- 200 g fresh cherries
- 200 g cherry jam or conserve
Toppings
- 1 tub brownie bites
- 25 g grated chocolate
Instructions
- Prepare Chocolate Custard: Pour the ready-made custard into a pan and add the chopped dark chocolate. Heat gently on low heat, stirring continuously until the chocolate is fully melted and the mixture is smooth. Remove from heat and transfer to a bowl. Allow to cool completely.
- Whip the Cream: In a separate bowl, pour the double cream and add the icing sugar. Whisk the cream to soft peaks, making sure it is light and airy but holds shape.
- Slice Swiss Roll: Cut the jumbo chocolate swiss roll into slices about 1-2 cm thick. If using Kirsch, drizzle 4-5 tablespoons over the slices to enhance flavor and moisture.
- Assemble the Trifle – First Layer: Arrange the swiss roll slices around the edge and base of a large trifle bowl. Pour half of the cooled chocolate custard over the swiss roll and spread evenly. Add half of the cherries from the jar or pie filling on top followed by half the brownie bites.
- Whipped Cream and Jam Layer: Spread half of the whipped cream over the cherries and brownie bites. Carefully pour one layer of cherry jam over the cream.
- Repeat Assembly: Repeat the layering process by adding remaining swiss roll slices, the second half of the chocolate custard, remaining cherries, and the rest of the brownie bites. Spread the remaining whipped cream on top to finish.
- Decorate and Chill: Garnish the top of the trifle with fresh cherries and sprinkle grated chocolate over for a decorative touch. Place the trifle in the fridge and allow it to set for at least one hour so the custard thickens and flavors meld together.
Notes
- You can substitute the cherries in kirsch with cherries in syrup or cherry pie filling according to preference.
- Kirsch is optional but adds a lovely cherry liqueur flavor that enhances the dessert.
- Make sure to fully cool the chocolate custard before assembling to prevent melting the whipped cream.
- Letting the trifle set in the refrigerator improves the texture and flavor integration.
