This comforting French Onion Meatballs recipe features tender meatballs simmered in a rich onion and beef broth gravy, topped with melted Gruyere cheese. Slow-cooked to perfection in a crock pot, this dish offers deep flavors reminiscent of classic French onion soup but served as a hearty main course. Perfect served over rice or mashed potatoes for a satisfying family meal.

  • Total Time: 3 hours 15 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

Meatballs and Onions

  • 2 medium yellow onions, sliced
  • 26 ounces frozen meatballs

Sauce

  • 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
  • 1 ounce brown gravy mix (package)
  • 2 teaspoons garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar

Thickening and Topping

  • ¼ cup water
  • 2 tablespoons corn starch
  • 1½ cups Gruyere cheese, grated

Instructions

  1. Layer onions and meatballs: Place the sliced yellow onions in the bottom of a 6-quart crock pot. Then, evenly pour the frozen meatballs over the onions to create the base of the dish.
  2. Prepare and add sauce: In a medium bowl, whisk together the low-sodium beef broth, brown gravy mix, minced garlic, black pepper, dried thyme, and white wine vinegar until well combined. Pour this mixture evenly over the meatballs in the crock pot.
  3. Slow cook the meatballs: Cover the crock pot and cook the mixture on high for 2½ to 3½ hours, or on low for 5 to 6 hours, allowing the flavors to meld and the meatballs to cook through fully.
  4. Thicken the sauce and add cheese: In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and water until smooth. Stir this into the crock pot mixture, mixing well to thicken the sauce. Sprinkle the grated Gruyere cheese evenly over the top, then cook uncovered for an additional 10 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  5. Serve and enjoy: Spoon the French onion meatballs and rich gravy over your choice of rice or mashed potatoes. Serve hot and enjoy this hearty, comforting meal.

Notes

  • Using low-sodium beef broth helps control the salt content in the dish.
  • Frozen meatballs can be substituted with fresh homemade meatballs if preferred; adjust cooking time accordingly.
  • If Gruyere cheese is unavailable, Swiss or Mozzarella can be used as an alternative for melting.
  • Cooking times may vary slightly depending on your crock pot model and temperature consistency.
  • For a thicker gravy, you can add an extra tablespoon of cornstarch mixed with water.
