Ingredients
Dairy & Chocolate
- 2 cups whole milk (or milk of your choice)
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Whipped cream (for topping)
Spices & Sweeteners
- 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp ground ginger
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/8 tsp ground cloves
- 1 tsp molasses
Garnish
- Cinnamon or nutmeg for sprinkling
- Crushed gingerbread cookies
Instructions
- Warm the dairy: Pour 2 cups of milk and 1/2 cup heavy cream into a medium saucepan. Set over medium-low heat and warm until steam curls at the edges, about 3 to 5 minutes. Stir gently to distribute heat evenly, avoiding simmering or scalding to keep the texture silky and creamy.
- Bloom the cocoa & spices: In a small bowl, whisk together 2 tbsp cocoa powder, 2 tbsp brown sugar, 1 tsp ground ginger, 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon, 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg, and 1/8 tsp ground cloves. Ladle in 2–3 tbsp of the warm milk and whisk into a smooth paste. Whisk this paste back into the saucepan until fully dissolved, preventing clumps and maximizing the gingerbread flavor.
- Melt the chocolate: Add 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips to the pot. Whisk slowly and steadily over low heat until the chocolate fully melts and the mixture becomes velvety and smooth, about 2–3 minutes. Lower the heat if needed to avoid burning.
- Add molasses & fine-tune consistency: Whisk in 1 tsp molasses to deepen flavor and color. Adjust consistency by adding a splash of milk if too thick or gently simmering for 1–2 minutes if too thin, allowing the mixture to reduce slightly.
- Taste & balance: Sample the hot chocolate and adjust sweetness or spice levels as needed by adding a bit more brown sugar or extra ginger/cinnamon to suit your personal preference. This step ensures the perfect custom flavor.
- Froth for café-style texture: Remove the saucepan from heat and whisk vigorously for 10–15 seconds to aerate the mixture and create a light, creamy body. Alternatively, use a milk frother for this step to enhance mouthfeel.
- Serve & garnish: Pour the hot chocolate into pre-warmed mugs. Top with a generous dollop of whipped cream, a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg, and crushed gingerbread cookies for a festive touch. Enjoy immediately while warm and aromatic. Optionally, stir in a splash of dark rum or bourbon off the heat for an adult variation.
Notes
- Use moderate heat to avoid scalding the milk, which can negatively impact texture and flavor.
- Blooming cocoa and spices first enhances the depth and aroma of the drink.
- Molasses is key to achieving that classic gingerbread flavor and should not be skipped.
- Adjust sweetness and spice levels to make the hot chocolate your own signature recipe.
- Warming mugs before serving helps keep the drink hot longer.
- For a boozy twist, add a splash of dark rum or bourbon off the heat just before serving.
