Ingredients
For the Patties
- 2 lbs Ground beef (80/20 blend for best flavor)
- 1/2 cup Breadcrumbs (Plain or seasoned)
- 1 Egg (Beaten)
- 1 Onion (Finely diced)
- 2 tsp Salt
- 1 tsp Black pepper
For the Gravy
- 3 tbsp Butter (Salted or unsalted)
- 3 tbsp All-purpose flour (For thickening gravy)
- 2 cups Beef broth (Low sodium preferred)
- 1 cup Heavy cream
- 1 Onion (Sliced)
- 1 tsp Garlic powder
Instructions
- Mix Patties: In a large bowl, gently combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, finely diced onion, salt, and black pepper until just mixed to avoid overworking the meat.
- Shape & Rest: Form the mixture into 6 to 8 oval-shaped patties. Set them aside to rest while you prepare the gravy base, allowing flavors to meld.
- Brown Patties: Heat an oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat and brown the patties for 3 to 4 minutes per side until golden brown. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- Make Gravy: In the same skillet, add butter and sauté the sliced onions until softened and translucent. Stir in the all-purpose flour and cook for 2 minutes to form a roux, then gradually whisk in the beef broth and heavy cream. Add garlic powder and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer until it thickens.
- Bake Casserole: Place the browned patties back into the skillet, nestling them into the creamy onion gravy. Cover the skillet tightly with a lid or foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes. Then remove the cover and bake uncovered for an additional 15 minutes to thicken the gravy and finish cooking the patties.
- Rest & Serve: Remove the skillet from the oven and let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving, allowing the flavors to set and the gravy to thicken slightly.
Notes
- Use an oven-safe skillet for seamless transition from stovetop to oven.
- For extra flavor, you can add fresh herbs like thyme or parsley to the gravy.
- Breadcrumbs can be plain or seasoned based on your preference.
- Letting the patties rest after browning helps retain juices during baking.
- Serve with mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
