These homemade mozzarella sticks are crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside, coated with seasoned panko breadcrumbs and fried to golden perfection. Served with a rich homemade marinara sauce, they make an ideal appetizer or snack that’s simple to prepare and utterly delicious.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 cups Panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon water (to beat with eggs)

Cheese

  • 12 ounces low moisture mozzarella cheese, cut into pieces 3-inch x ¾ inch (or 12 oz string cheese cut in half)

Others

  • 1 quart vegetable oil (for frying)
  • Homemade marinara sauce, for dipping

Instructions

  1. Prepare baking sheet: Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside to use for the coated cheese sticks.
  2. Mix dry coating base: In a small shallow bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sea salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.
  3. Beat eggs: In a second bowl, add the eggs and 1 tablespoon of water; beat together until smooth and uniform.
  4. Prepare panko mixture: In a third bowl, mix together the Panko breadcrumbs and Italian seasoning evenly.
  5. Coat the cheese sticks: Working one piece at a time, dip each mozzarella stick into the egg mixture, then dredge in the flour mixture, dip back into the egg mixture, and finally coat thoroughly with the seasoned Panko, gently pressing the crumbs to adhere. Place each coated stick on the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Freeze: Place the baking sheet with coated cheese sticks into the freezer and freeze for 45 minutes to help the coating set and prevent cheese from leaking during frying.
  7. Heat oil: In a large, heavy-bottomed pot, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C), using a deep fat thermometer for accuracy.
  8. Fry the cheese sticks: Remove the frozen mozzarella sticks from the freezer. Working in small batches to avoid overcrowding, gently lower the sticks into the hot oil and fry, turning to ensure even browning, until golden brown on all sides, about 2 minutes per batch.
  9. Drain and serve: Use a slotted spoon to transfer the cooked mozzarella sticks to a metal cooling rack set over a baking sheet to drain excess oil. Repeat for remaining cheese sticks.
  10. Serve: Serve the mozzarella sticks immediately while hot and gooey with homemade marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • Freezing the coated cheese sticks before frying helps keep the cheese from melting too quickly and oozing out during frying.
  • Use a deep fat thermometer to maintain the oil temperature at 350°F for optimal frying results.
  • Do not overcrowd the pot during frying to maintain consistent oil temperature and crispy coating.
  • Use low-moisture mozzarella for better melting and less shrinkage during frying.
  • Homemade marinara sauce adds fresh tomato flavor that complements the cheesy sticks perfectly.
