Ingredients
Sushi Rice
- 2 cups Sushi Rice (14 ounces / 400 grams)
- ΒΌ cup Rice Vinegar (60 ml)
- 1 tablespoon Sugar
- 1 teaspoon Salt
Fillings
- 7 ounces Smoked Salmon (200 grams)
- 1 Large Ripe Avocado
- 1 Small Cucumber
- 1 Small Carrot (optional)
Additional
- 5 Nori Sheets
- Soy Sauce, for serving
- Pickled Ginger, for serving
- Wasabi Paste, for serving
Instructions
- Cook the Rice: Prepare the sushi rice according to the package instructions. In a small bowl, mix together rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until the sugar dissolves. Pour this seasoning mixture over the cooked rice and stir well to combine. Allow the rice to cool completely to room temperature before using.
- Prepare the Vegetables and Salmon: Cut the cucumber and carrot into thin matchstick strips. Slice the avocado and smoked salmon into chunks approximately 4 inches (10 cm) long, ensuring they are uniform for easy rolling.
- Assemble the Sushi Roll: Place a sushi mat on your work surface and lay one nori sheet on top with the rough side facing you. Spread an even layer of cooled sushi rice over the nori, leaving about 0.5 inch (1.5 cm) at the far edge free of rice. This edge will help seal the roll.
- Add the Fillings: Arrange a thin line of smoked salmon, cucumber (or carrot if using), and avocado along the center of the rice-covered nori sheet.
- Roll the Sushi: Moisten the rice-free edge of the nori with water. Using the sushi mat to guide you, roll the sushi away from you tightly and evenly. Apply gentle pressure while rolling to keep the roll compact and secure its shape.
- Slice and Serve: Using a sharp knife, slice the sushi roll into bite-sized pieces. Serve with soy sauce, wasabi paste, and pickled ginger on the side for dipping and flavor enhancement.
Notes
- Use a bamboo sushi rolling mat for best results in shaping and rolling the sushi tightly.
- Smoked salmon can be substituted with fresh raw salmon if preferred, but ensure it is sushi-grade for safety.
- Make sure the rice is fully cooled before spreading it on the nori to prevent tearing and to help it stick better.
- Carrot is optional but adds a nice crunch and color contrast.
