Ingredients
Pastry
- 1 package Puff Pastry (or pizza dough for a heartier option)
Filling
- 8 oz Cream Cheese (softened, goat cheese can be used)
- 1 cup Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese (mozzarella can be used)
- 2 medium Sliced Jalapenos (fresh or pickled)
- 1 tsp Garlic Powder (or use fresh minced garlic for more flavor)
Topping
- 1 large Egg (for egg wash, or use milk for vegan option)
Instructions
- Prepare oven and baking sheet: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
- Make the filling: In a mixing bowl, combine softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, sliced jalapenos, and garlic powder. Stir thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and creamy for balanced flavor distribution.
- Roll and cut pastry: Lightly flour your work surface and roll out the puff pastry to about 1/4 inch thickness. Cut the dough into strips approximately 2 inches wide for easy shaping.
- Fill and twist: Place a spoonful of the cheese and jalapeno filling on one half of each strip. Fold over, seal the edges carefully to prevent filling leakage, then twist each strip into a spiral shape to create the distinctive twists.
- Arrange and brush: Place the prepared twists on the lined baking sheet with some space between them. Brush the tops with the beaten egg wash to achieve a lovely golden and glossy finish once baked.
- Bake: Bake the twists in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until they puff up nicely and turn a golden brown, indicating they are cooked through and crispy.
Notes
- For a milder version, remove seeds from jalapenos before slicing.
- Substitute goat cheese or mozzarella to vary flavor and texture.
- Use milk instead of egg wash for a vegan-friendly option.
- Ensure puff pastry is thawed properly before rolling for best results.
- Serve warm for optimal taste and texture.
