Ingredients
Beef Mixture
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 5 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 Tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 Tablespoon freshly grated ginger
- 2/3 cup light brown sugar
- 1 cup low-sodium soy sauce
- 2 teaspoons Sriracha hot sauce, or crushed red pepper flakes, or chili garlic sauce
- 1 bunch green onion, chopped (half for cooking, half for garnish)
To Serve
- Hot cooked brown or white rice
- Fresh cucumber, sliced
Instructions
- Cook the Beef: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Season the ground beef with black pepper. Add it to the skillet and break it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook, stirring and crumbling the beef into small pieces, until browned and fully cooked. Drain any excess grease to keep the dish lean. For a finer texture, optionally pulse the cooked beef 2-3 times in a food processor and then return it to the pan.
- Add Flavorings and Sauce: Stir in the sesame oil, minced garlic, and freshly grated ginger into the browned beef. Mix well. Add the light brown sugar, low-sodium soy sauce, and Sriracha (or your chosen chili sauce). Cook for a few minutes allowing the sauce to thicken slightly and absorb into the meat, enhancing the flavors.
- Finish and Serve: Stir in half of the chopped green onions into the beef mixture and save the rest for garnish. Serve the Korean ground beef hot over cooked brown or white rice. Garnish with the remaining green onions and fresh cucumber slices to add a fresh, crisp texture to the bowl.
Notes
- Use lean ground beef to reduce excess fat and grease.
- Adjust the amount of Sriracha or chili sauce to control the spiciness according to preference.
- The optional food processor step helps create a finer beef texture resembling Korean restaurant-style bowls.
- Serve with brown rice for a healthier fiber-rich option or white rice for traditional taste.
- Fresh cucumber adds a cool contrast to the warm, spicy beef mixture.
