These Pepperoni Pizza Rolls are a delicious homemade snack featuring soft pizza dough rolled with savory pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, and pepperoni slices. Perfectly baked until golden and crisp on the outside, these rolls make an excellent appetizer or party treat that’s easy to share and enjoy.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 50 minutes
  • Yield: 5 servings (approximately 24 pizza rolls)

Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 1 recipe homemade pizza dough

Filling and Topping

  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 2/3 cup pizza sauce (homemade or store-bought)
  • Italian seasoning or ground basil, to taste
  • Garlic powder, to taste
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 60-65 pepperoni slices
  • Optional: 1/2 cup yellow cornmeal
  • Optional: extra mozzarella cheese and fresh basil for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough: Complete your homemade pizza dough recipe through step 4. Once ready, punch down the dough to release air bubbles, then divide it in half. On a lightly floured surface, roll each half into a roughly 10 by 12-inch rectangle.
  2. Prepare the dough surface: Lightly brush each dough rectangle with 1 teaspoon of olive oil to prevent sogginess. Use your fingers to create dents across the dough surface to avoid bubbling during baking. Spread 1/3 cup of pizza sauce evenly over each dough rectangle. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning and garlic powder to taste.
  3. Add cheese and pepperoni: Evenly distribute 1/2 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese over the sauce, then layer pepperoni slices on top. Carefully roll each dough rectangle tightly into a log shape.
  4. Chill the rolls: Place the dough logs seam side down on a prepared baking sheet and refrigerate uncovered for at least 20 minutes. This chilling step helps the rolls hold their shape when sliced.
  5. Preheat oven and prepare baking sheets: Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C). Line two large baking sheets with silicone baking mats or parchment paper.
  6. Slice and prepare for baking: Remove the dough logs from the refrigerator and slice each into 12 one-inch pieces. Pour cornmeal onto a plate. Dip the bottom of each slice into the cornmeal, then place 12 slices on each baking sheet, cornmeal-side down. Optionally, sprinkle extra mozzarella cheese over the tops of the rolls.
  7. Bake: Bake the pizza rolls for 15-20 minutes or until the sides are lightly browned and golden.
  8. Cool and serve: Let the pizza rolls cool for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil if desired and serve with extra pizza sauce for dipping. Enjoy immediately, or store tightly covered in the refrigerator for a few days and reheat before serving.

Notes

  • Chilling the dough logs before slicing is essential to keep the rolls intact and prevent them from falling apart.
  • Using cornmeal on the bottom of each roll is optional but adds a nice crispy texture.
  • These pizza rolls are best enjoyed fresh but can be refrigerated and reheated.
  • Feel free to add additional toppings like fresh basil or extra cheese to customize your rolls.
  • Use a sharp knife or dental floss to slice rolled dough cleanly without squashing.
