This Philly Cheesesteak Casserole is a comforting and flavorful twist on the classic sandwich, combining seasoned ground beef, sautéed bell peppers and onions, creamy cheese sauce, and melted provolone cheese baked to golden perfection. Ready in just 40 minutes, it’s a perfect weeknight dinner for the whole family.

  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

Meat and Seasonings

  • 2 lb Ground beef
  • 2 tsp Sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp Black pepper

Vegetables and Spices

  • 3 large Bell peppers
  • 1 large Onion
  • 1/2 tbsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp Smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic powder

Dairy and Liquids

  • 4 oz Cream cheese (cut into pieces and softened at room temperature)
  • 1/4 cup Chicken broth, reduced sodium
  • 6 slices Provolone cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (177 degrees C) to prepare for the baking step.
  2. Cook the beef: Place the ground beef into a large sauté pan over medium-high heat. Break the beef up with a spatula and season with sea salt and black pepper. Cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beef is browned and fully cooked.
  3. Sauté vegetables: Add diced bell peppers and onions to the pan with the beef. Season with Italian seasoning, smoked paprika, and garlic powder. Sauté the mixture for 10-15 minutes until the vegetables are tender and fragrant.
  4. Add cream cheese and broth: Incorporate the cream cheese and chicken broth into the pan. Stir continuously until the cream cheese melts and blends smoothly with the beef and vegetables, creating a creamy sauce.
  5. Assemble casserole: Transfer the beef and vegetable mixture into a large baking dish, spreading it evenly. Arrange the provolone cheese slices on top, slightly overlapping them to cover the surface.
  6. Bake: Place the baking dish into the preheated oven and bake for 10-15 minutes, until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden brown on top.

Notes

  • Softening the cream cheese at room temperature helps it incorporate smoothly into the sauce.
  • You can customize the bell peppers by using different colors for a vibrant dish.
  • Use reduced sodium chicken broth to control saltiness in the dish.
  • Feel free to add sliced mushrooms or hot sauce for extra flavor.
  • This casserole pairs well with a simple green salad or crusty bread.
