This easy and flavorful sausage and cabbage skillet recipe offers a satisfying one-pan meal that’s perfect for weeknight dinners. Tender shredded cabbage is sautéed with garlic and perfectly browned sausage slices, seasoned with simple spices for a delicious, comforting dish ready in just 30 minutes.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 2½ tablespoons olive or avocado oil
  • 4 fully cooked sausages, sliced into 1/4 inch thick circles
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
  • 1 small head of cabbage, shredded
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Brown the Sausage: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the sliced sausages. Sauté, flipping frequently for 1 to 2 minutes until the sausage slices develop a nice browning. Remove the sausage from the pan and set aside.
  2. Sauté the Garlic: Add the remaining 1½ tablespoons of oil to the skillet along with the minced garlic. Cook for about 1 minute, stirring constantly, until the garlic turns a golden color and becomes fragrant.
  3. Cook the Cabbage: Add the shredded cabbage, salt, black pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes (if using) to the skillet. Stir everything together and let it cook, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is almost tender, about 10 minutes.
  4. Combine and Finish: Return the browned sausage slices to the pan and stir to combine with the cabbage. Continue cooking for an additional 3 to 5 minutes until the sausage is heated through and the cabbage is fully tender. Taste and adjust seasoning with more salt if needed before serving.

Notes

  • For a milder version, omit the crushed red pepper flakes.
  • Fully cooked sausages can be any variety you prefer, such as smoked, breakfast, or Italian sausages.
  • If you want to add extra veggies, consider tossing in some diced onions or bell peppers when sautéing the garlic.
  • Leftovers keep well for up to 3 days refrigerated and can be reheated on the stovetop or microwave.
