Ingredients
Apples
- 6 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Gala)
- 6 wooden sticks (or popsicle sticks/skewers)
Coating
- 2 cups white chocolate chips (or almond bark or candy melts)
- 1 cup freeze-dried strawberries, crushed
- ½ cup shortcake cookies or graham crackers, crushed (or crushed Golden Oreos)
- ¼ cup powdered sugar (for dusting)
Instructions
- Prepare the apples: Wash and dry the apples thoroughly to ensure no moisture affects the chocolate coating. Insert a wooden stick firmly into the center of each apple to create a handle for dipping and eating.
- Melt the white chocolate: Place the white chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 30-second intervals, stirring between each to prevent burning, until the chocolate is completely smooth. Alternatively, melt the chocolate using a double boiler over simmering water for more controlled melting.
- Dip the apples: Holding the stick, dip each apple into the melted white chocolate, turning it to coat evenly on all sides. Allow any excess chocolate to drip off back into the bowl to avoid thick clumps.
- Apply the crunch topping: Immediately roll the coated apple in a mixture of crushed freeze-dried strawberries and crushed shortcake cookies, pressing gently so the coating sticks well and creates a textured, flavorful crust.
- Set the candy apples: Place the coated apples on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Lightly dust each apple with powdered sugar to enhance the appearance and add a touch of sweetness.
- Chill: Refrigerate the apples for at least 30 minutes until the white chocolate is fully set and firm, making them ready to serve and enjoy.
Notes
- Use tart apples like Granny Smith for a nice contrast to the sweet coating.
- Freeze-dried strawberries add a unique, intense fruit flavor and crunch that complements the white chocolate.
- Shortcake cookies can be substituted with graham crackers or Golden Oreos for different flavor profiles.
- If white chocolate seizes during melting, add a teaspoon of vegetable oil or butter to smooth it out.
- Serve chilled for the best texture.
