This Puppy Chow recipe is a colorful, sweet twist on the classic snack mix, featuring vanilla cereal coated in strawberry and pink candy melts, powdered sugar, strawberry cake mix, freeze-dried strawberries, and topped with strawberry-flavored M&M’S. Perfect for parties, snack time, or a fun treat.

  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 5 cups Vanilla cereal, divided into 2 bowls
  • 1/2 cup strawberry cake mix
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup freeze-dried strawberries, finely crushed
  • 1/2 cup M&M’S, Strawberry Chocolate flavor

Candy Coating

  • 4 oz pink candy melts
  • 4 oz red candy melts

Instructions

  1. Prepare Dry Mix: In a large Ziploc bag, combine the strawberry cake mix, powdered sugar, and finely crushed freeze-dried strawberries. Seal the bag and shake or mix to evenly blend these dry ingredients. Set this mixture aside for later use.
  2. Melt First Candy Melts: Microwave 4 ounces of either the red or pink candy melts in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until fully melted and smooth.
  3. Coat First Cereal Bowl: Pour the melted candy melts over one of the bowls of vanilla cereal. Mix thoroughly to coat all the cereal pieces evenly with the melted candy.
  4. Add Dry Mix to First Bowl: Measure out 3/4 cup of the prepared dry ingredient mix and add it to the chocolate-coated cereal bowl. Stir gently to combine so the dry mix sticks to the candy coating. Set this bowl aside.
  5. Melt Second Candy Melts: Microwave the remaining 4 ounces of candy melts (the other color) in 30-second intervals, stirring until fully melted and smooth.
  6. Coat Second Cereal Bowl: Pour the melted candy melts over the second bowl of vanilla cereal. Mix thoroughly to ensure even coverage.
  7. Add Remaining Dry Mix: Add the remaining dry ingredient mixture to the second bowl of coated cereal. Stir well to combine evenly.
  8. Combine Bowls and Add M&M’S: In a large bowl, combine both bowls of colored and coated cereal mix. Add the strawberry chocolate M&M’S to the mixture.
  9. Final Mix: Stir all ingredients together gently to disperse the M&M’S throughout the Puppy Chow mixture. The snack is now ready to serve or store.

Notes

  • Use 30-second microwave intervals to avoid burning the candy melts; stir well between intervals.
  • Freeze-dried strawberries must be crushed finely to ensure they blend well into the dry mix.
  • You can substitute vanilla cereal with other neutral-flavored cereals if preferred.
  • For best texture, consume within a week and store in an airtight container at room temperature.
  • This recipe is not gluten free unless using gluten free cereal and cake mix.
