Ingredients
Chaffle Batter
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
Tuna Salad Filling
- 2 cans tuna, in water, drained
- 1/4 cup red onion, chopped
- 1 stalk celery, chopped
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1/2 tablespoon relish
- salt and pepper, to taste
Additional
- 1 slice cheddar cheese
- Nonstick cooking spray
Instructions
- Preheat Waffle Iron: Preheat your waffle iron thoroughly and spray it with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Prepare Chaffle Batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, shredded mozzarella cheese, salt, and pepper until well combined.
- Cook Chaffles: Pour about one quarter of the batter into the preheated waffle iron and cook for 4 to 5 minutes until the chaffle is golden and crispy. Remove and set aside.
- Make Additional Chaffles: Repeat the process until you have at least two chaffles to form a sandwich.
- Assemble Tuna Sandwich: Mix the drained tuna, chopped red onion, celery, mayonnaise, relish, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Spoon half of this tuna mixture onto one chaffle, top with a slice of cheddar cheese, then place another chaffle on top and press down gently.
- Bake Sandwich: Place the assembled sandwich on a lined baking sheet and bake in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 7 minutes to melt the cheese and warm the filling.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the sandwich from the oven and let it cool for about 3 minutes before enjoying.
Notes
- You can substitute the mozzarella with any melting cheese you prefer, but mozzarella provides the best texture for chaffles.
- For extra flavor, add herbs like dill or parsley to the tuna salad.
- Adjust seasoning to taste, especially the salt and pepper.
